Search Engine Day :: What If You Had More Control Over Your Backlinks?

If the manual process of reciprocal links to get backlinks, or incoming links, seemed a bit grueling to you, and you’re curious about why I say I rarely do so, you’ll want to read this post, and listen to the podcast that will follow later today/tomorrow.

Think about this: what if you could get either anchor links (the kind that use your keywords), or raw links, for the keyword phrases you most desire, on pages that are related to your site’s topic?

What if you could change a few things about your site and get a few hundreds of these links legitimately, without upsetting other site owners, or search engines?

What if you could then use those links to build association between offsite content and your web pages?

Search Engine Day :: Traditional Linking Methods

Let’s have a run down of some of the traditional ways of link building and whether they are worthwhile – or even advisable – to use.

Should You Buy Links?

Not necessarily. In a post I made last month I referenced a quote from one of Google’s engineers. In no uncertain terms, the Google representattive states that buying links to increase page rank is “outside our quality guidelines”.

What About Directory Submissions?

There are some great directory sites. Many of them are extremely worthwhile. But even if you find several dozen that are spidered frequently and appropriate to your site, what happens when you exhaust your options?

Search Engine Day :: Are Some Links Better?

And, for that matter, should you focus on sheer quantity of links to your site, or the quality of those links?

For our first piece of evidence, let’s ask Google.

In a post to their blog in September, we find the following:

By using a practice called googlebombing, however, determined pranksters can occasionally produce odd results. In this case, a number of webmasters use the phrases [failure] and [miserable failure] to describe and link to President Bush’s website, thus pushing it to the top of searches for those phrases. We don’t condone the practice of googlebombing, or any other action that seeks to affect the integrity of our search results, but we’re also reluctant to alter our results by hand in order to prevent such items from showing up.

While that doesn’t mean you should engage in the practice of Google Bombing, by any means, it does give you a clue to how effective it can be to use the description of the site that is being linked to where appropriate.

Yet you can’t always control the way links back to your site appear. So what are your other options?

Search Engine Day :: So How Important Is Linking Anyway?

A post I made about linking awaaaays back in July 2004 referenced an answer to a similiar question in Google Answers. The short answer was that if you’re getting linked a certain way or from a certain type of page, it may be THE most important thing. You could almost screw everything else up, but if you got enough of the right type of links, you might just come out okay in the end.

I’m in partial agreement with that, but only from the perspective that if you are able to get 100,000 links that contain your desired keywords or are from a related page, that aren’t reciprocal, then sugar, you’ve got it made in the shade.

Of course, this type of thing doesn’t really happen in the real world to the entrepreneur or small business site, now does it?

RSS News :: VeriSign Acquires Moreover Technologies

Before I start the Search Engine News, I just wanted to share the “Are You Kidding Me?” news of last night.

Thoughts ==> Wow. First Weblogs.com. Then, if that’s not enough of a taste of RSS and Blogging, they scoop up Moreover. It’s an RSS shopping spree. Do me a favor today… laugh and point at anyone who told you that learning to use RSS Technology isn’t important for your site. Apparently it’s not just important, but that flow of information has a monetary worth… (more…)

Search Engine Day :: Just for giggles

I had a nap, but I have some prep work to do for a couple of new clients, so I’m back up for a few hours.

I saw this in the Ask Yahoo section and it made me giggle – thought I’d share it with you…

The topic is What numbers come after millions, billions, and trillions… and how high do they go?.

Part of the answer?

“The googolplex has often been nominated as the largest named number in the world. If a googol is ten to the one hundredth, then a googolplex is one followed by a googol of zeroes. Ugh, we think we feel a headache coming on.”

Haha… I know it’s probably not a friendly veiled dig at Google. But it sure made me laugh…

Search Engine Day :: Recent Yahoo RSS News

Marketing Loop has an intruging post about the RSS whitepaper Yahoo recently published. There’s also a new article out by Rok Hrastnik that analyzes the results.

Marketing Loop Clip ==> “Yahoo! has published today a whitepaper titled RSS — Crossing into the Mainstream. The study conducted by Yahoo! using Internet-based methodology and their usage data.

Among their findings is that albeit becoming more common, very few Internet users are aware of RSS. This means that further elaboration is needed to encourage the use of RSS.”

Rok’s article Clip ==> “27% of Internet users consume RSS syndicated content on personalized start pages (e.g., My Yahoo!, My MSN) without knowing that RSS is the enabling technology.”
