Hey, You're New Here! We love new people.

It would be great seeing you back again, so please subscribe by RSS feed, or get updates by email, before you forget!

“I love my new facelift,” my blog said to me this morning. “Where’ve you been all night?”

“Oh, just catching up on support emails and tickets. I’m getting my energy back so I’m on my first 28 hours straight awake since October. It’s fun.”

“You need to go to bed. Ooooo - first, let me tell you what happened!”

“What?” I eyed him suspiciously. (Yes, my blog is a he, too, just like Google and Yahoo. A girl’s got to have male company at work.)

“Don’t get mad. It’s good news.”

“WHAT?? I’m sleepy!”

“Let’s use our inside voice, Tinu. It’s FeedBurner.”

“Love. FeedBurner. What about him?”

“He’s pointing at you today - I saw it on the rotating publisher buzz links on one of the blog pages.”

“Feedburner is soooo kewl.” (Okay. I lied. I don’t spell cool like that unless I’m mocking someone.) “I Should write another article about how you can get traffic with FeedBurner.”

“Yeah…” my blog sighed contently in response.

“So. Blog-O-Mine. Can I go the freak to bed now?”

“Haha… yeah. OBVIOUSLY you need your sleep.”

P.S. I forgot to thank a very special Pearson for bringing sexy back to my blog. Great one!
You can copy this template if you want to, cuz if it’s okay with Chris, I’ma hack this baby up with new colors and stuff!

Ultimate Tag Warrior
http://www.neato.co.nz/ultimate-tag-warrior/

I can’t say enough good things about this plug-in. Mainly because it makes my blog more “findable” by both search engines and people who follow tags. Plus, the tag cloud it optionally creates increases my page views - instead of sending my visitors off into cyberspace, it sends them to a page that is a collection of posts I’ve written on that subject.

What makes it so killer isn’t just that it has the potential to be a huge money maker for your blog. It’s really about making your blog super easy to manage. You can assign a keyword - any keyword - to a link. From then on, any time you write about that word or phrase, it’s automatically linked to any link you want. You can change the link or the word, and if it was linked to something else before, it reverts back.

So now, whenever I want to link to a product of mine, or a friend’s site, I can just write naturally, and know it will get picked up and linked when I publish the post. And I can set it up to hyperlink to that keyword once, or five times. Doesn’t matter. Plus it tracks the number of times the link is clicked.

There’s tons of ways you could use this and I am thinking about dedicating a special post just to this.

I love testing and tracking everything. This lets me know at a glance things like, where my last visitors came from, where I get the most links just to my blog and not the whole site, what the top keyword phrases for my blog are, and for different search engines.

It’s very handy when I suddently get a spike of traffic, and want to know, live, where the increase came from.

Akismet
http://Akismet.com/

With the automated blog comment posters out there, I want to protect the integrity of my blog so I can respond to comments when I’m around. Akismet knows the spam pattern somehow, and catches spam before it gets posted to your blog. Nice.

As of today, Akismet has caught 3,864 spam for me since I installed it in March of this year.

Sweet.

Feedburner Feed Replacement
http://www.orderedlist.com/articles/wordpress_feedburner_plugin/

I adore FeedBurner. I just can’t say it enough times. This plug in makes sure all my main feed traffic goes through FeedBurner.

DoFollow
http://kimmo.suominen.com/sw/dofollow/

Now, when a legitimate person leaves a link on my site, they get the full reward of a link back. It disables the default nofollow tag, so that search engines recognize any link on my site as a real link. On the rare occasion that Akismet doesn’t catch a spam comment, I have a day (or more if I like) to read my comments and make sure they are real, so I don’t have to do any real time comment moderating.

If an imposter comes through, I just delete the comment.

I don’t use this on all my blogs, but it’s quite spiffy. I can choose to automate the process of directing people to more information on the same topic. On blogs where I’m not using tags (like some of my private blogs), I can still send them to other posts on the same topic. This increases my page views by increasing the usefulness of the blog to my visitors.

I don’t know about you, but even I had trouble with all Google’s new updates and new features from the summer up until now. So I’m going to make myself a little guide of all the new things I want to use and test out that I haven’t had time to do. I have to do a video series for another project I have anyway, one I meant to do like, two months ago?

So if I was to share my observations - what would you most want me to write about? Are all the office tools important to you at all, or do you just want traffic related items? Or even webmaster and traffic related items?

You have about a week to get your answer in.

The Question: How Can Anyone Stay on top of the Search Engines when they keep changing their systems of ranking?

The Short Answer:

Stop betting on just one horse and spread your risk around.

The Long Answer:

I’m writing a guide about that now, but in the series that is following, I’m going to talk about just a few tips.

1- Approach the Search Engines with a strategy that caters to them.

I don’t just mean get lots of links and use your keywords in the right places. I’m saying that most people try to build towards gaining one major keyword position, and if they lose that spot in an update, their sales and traffic come tumbling down.

Instead of pinning your hopes to one keyword ranking, target a number of visitors, and adjust your strategy accordingly. Find the places where search engines need your listings to make their databases better and they’ll be happy to rank yo.

2- Make all the different parts of your overall traffic strategy beneficial to your search engine strategy.

For example, even though I knew naming a site with the keywords you want in it is out of vogue, that doesn’t mean I can’t still optimize my site for that area. I keep my keywords in mind when I write articles, create press releases, start new sites, start new companies… always.

I also keep linking in mind in every single point of strategy for a new company. With corporate sites, it’s not as easy to get links, or to do link trades. On the other hand, no matter what kind of site you have you can fall back on article marketing and directories.

3- Never stop building your site or your links.

Obviously this is easier if you blog. But if you don’t, you can still keep adding new pages to your site. And who says you can’t have an RSS feed of your updates, whether you’re blogging or not?

For basic, steady link growth, I usually say to submit at least an article a week, and a press release each month. You usually get higher quality links in a faster, more semi-automated way than simply purusing link trades.

And of course, start out your link pursuit with some of the lesser directories. I started out with a list of about 600 directories - not just for business but for ezines, podcasts, rss feeds, blogging, general web directories, etc.

And I started a specialized directory of my own at that time, with the request that those who submitted link back to me as well. Starting a useful resource is a great way to get links.

You know sometimes when you browse around the Net and you see something really brave…. admirably so… but almost … foolhardy in its braveness? Almost a little…. dangerous? But so compelling you can’t keep your eyes off it?

I know, it hardly ever happens. But I got an email from a good friend of mine, and I have to admit that I got sucked in and good. I couldn’t help it. I love seeing original thought, and watching things sprout from infancy into mega-stardom. It’s why we watch all those reality shows, right? The ones that have winners especially. :)

This one’s a real behind-the-scenes Web 2.0 company launch. And this is probably going to be HUGE. You know when you see something that isn’t a Google-killer, but you wish Google would buy it? That’s what I mean.

Just watch this video, and tell me you’re not hooked.

I’ll have more when the newsletter comes out buy I just wanted to mention them really quickly. Don’t forget to stop by the blog and talk to the “stars” of the videos.
