or the Top Two Live Video Tools.
I have to come back to the Video Playlist tools. I plan on interviewing both of the contacts I have, so it will be worth the wait I promise. I’ll have, at minimum, snippets in the blog. Scout’s honor.
Okay. So one day last week a friend who I partner with on larger corporate projects calls me up and is like, I’m live, baby. I’m thinking, what is this nut talking about now. Turns out he was using UStream to broadcast live from his computer. I twittered about it, then I tuned in. At some point we figured out that if I Skyped him, I could be the co-host via voice if let my voice go through the speakers or the speaker phone (depending on how I called of course).
We spend all night talking and planning to take over the world, (great for me, because I was having one of those pain nights where I can’t sleep.) Then the next day, he has this new show, titled from a joke we had. We proceed to start doing some corporate planning again, and this guy pops into the room, modest cat. We talk to him, and a few more people come by, one of them is pretty high up in the UStream.tv Team, on tech support - talk about your warm welcome. Read more

This is the second to last post if I’m keeping you up, darlings.
What I’m doing now is giving you links to lists that other people have compiled of video sharing sites. I haven’t gone through and comprehensively figured out how much traffic they get, what their features are, or what the community at each site is like - this here is the free version so you’ll have to do all the work yourself, love.
Okay, drum roll, someone….
This top ten video comparion list seems to have turned into over 40. Nice chart.
Here’s the obligatory Wikipedia list. rel will equal no follow. If you’re not part of the No Follow Community that’s an inside joke. ![]()
Read/Write Web did a fairly comprehensive list that included lots of other resources back in February of this year 51 links if I remember correctly.
But EverybodyGoTo wins the prize for Dear Mother of All, Now That’s a List for their list of 210 online video sites. I hear there are already 90 more worth mentioning, and several uploading services, but I’m getting sleepy guys. That has to go into the resource I was singing about earlier.

If you can’t see the soundless video above, it means UStream is down.
Sorry about the delay. I went over to UStream, which we’re going to talk about shortly when I get to tools, and I got caught up because the recorded video interface is fixed. All the video messages I sent within their system are live, and I was really excited, especially since I had no makeup on.
And if I played my cards right, the video above is of “Pillow Talk with Tinu” a message I sent to a pal of mine who has a show over there. Of course the sound doesn’t appear to be working, but that was on my side.
Back to the lecture at hand.
I’m about to tell you something, a free tip I could (and probably will) write a whole book on. If I had any advice for you right now, it would be that if you want to be popular fast, and you’re technically savvy enough, skip straight to live video. Record it and put it up on YouTube, etc, and you’ve massacred two pigeons with one rock.
To keep things short (I could write on this forever) let me just give you five reasons.
- I believe that people are going to be more willing to see commercials when watching a live stream. That means this could become a revenue model.
- Cheaper point of entry. The most you need is access to an audio and video capable computer with a web cam. On Google Products I saw one for $8. On Amazon I see the ones in stock as cheaply as $17.
With the free and/or cheap broadcasting helpers we’ll discuss today, you can be on air in a few minutes, and you don’t have to worry about design, or the layout of the video, or editing things together. You do a live show, you hit record. Bam, you’re done.
- Fast. It took me a while to realize I’d have to use the USB setting for my built-in Mac camera, but from there, I had my first video on in less than a minute. I’m camera shy though, at least until I get better, so the no-makeup video you see above is the best you’ll get out of me.
- People can’t seem to resist something that is being broadcast live. You have to involve your audience, but it’s a blast. And with the instant community some of the recent tools bring, finding viewers isn’t the problem - it’s tuning off so you can get some sleep. Which we’ll talk about another day.
- Messing up is part of the fun. If you make a mistake and it’s funny, YouTube it.
Now, because I’m camera shy right now, I won’t be able to go right to live video yet, at least not as myself. So what are your options if you realize how big live video is going to be and you want to be an early comer to the game?
Stay tuned. I’m not sleepy yet…

When I first mentioned that I was looking for content about Web Video at twitter, MarshallK was kind enough to toss me a cool tidbit, and I didn’t even have to ask.
His report is about Live Video Online, which is definitely going to be the center of our focus today in the next few posts. There’s something that is way more compelling about a live person talking to you, and having no idea what could happen that’s better than any recorded video, no matter how polished it is.
Here’s some of what my home skillet Marshall had to say:
Video on the web, one of the most compelling types of media being published, will no longer by exclusively asynchronous. Have you seen my favorite podcasts in the player on the sidebar of this blog? Make those all live broadcasts and I will gladly watch one or two minutes of commercials every 15 minutes. The barrier to entry into the video publishing world has been lowered dramatically and when live video broadcast is easily accessible then we are going to see some thrilling stuff.
Can you hear me in the cheap seats? Live video is very quickly going to change everything in web video again, and remember you heard it first at Marshallk. It’s not hard to get people to watch video, and even easier, live video. Here’s someone telling you they’d gladly watch ads during live shows. I am seconding that. I don’t think either of us says this lightly.
Go read more of what he had to say about live video, then read his bio. The man knows what he’s talking about. Subscribing to his feed would be another good move.
If you’ve got input on any aspect of live video and are an authority through use or career, remember to leave me a message at Twitter. I’m only reading messages from following friends, though. And yes, I’ll friend you back.

Okay, I have said that I was going to dedicate another day to Web Video, because it’s getting hotter by the second.
And I’ve found out so much that unless you feel like reading 40 posts, it’s just too much. So instead, most likely this evening (because I have to get someone to do the extensive linking for me, and my hands hurt) I’m going to do a bunch of posts about why you should use web video to market your site, and feature a few tools, etc.
Then I’ll do a much more in-depth report later - if you want to know when it’s available, join the newsletter.
