5 Popular Social News Sites That are Self-Promotion Friendly

Hey, You're New Here! We love new people.

It would be great seeing you back again, so please subscribe by RSS feed, or get updates by email, before you forget!

If you’ve decided to give social news site submission a whirl, presumably because your site is just so danged popular as to garner more votes than just your own, it’s best to start with sites that are friendly-to, or even insistent-upon, shameless self promotion.

Otherwise, you’ll find that most social bookmarking sites are quite unfriendly to those who submit their own links frequently.

Some will ban you for doing it at all.

There are ways to deal with this without gaming the system, but we’ll be dicussing that at an upcoming Social Media Strategy webinar.

Here’s a few to start you off, by no means an exhaustive list, as we’re still in testing on that. These are the ones who send me the most traffic to my various sites, in the order that they bring a balance of traffic and accolades. Add your favorites in the comments section, and when I update with the all-inclusive list, I’ll link to you as a submitter both online and in the free downloadable version.

  1. PlugIM
Auto-submits for you with free account. Something’s wrong with our WordPress installation that I haven’t figured out yet, but when it was kosher, this worked like gangbusters. Ryan - U Da Man.
  2. BUMPzee
When I was posting under an alias during my sick period, BUMPzee was like Oxygen to me. Scotty rocks. Also auto submits when you get an account.
  3. Sphinn
If you’re not in marketing/seo/traffic generation, this will be more of a resource than a place to add to, but Danny is too cool for me to skip this site.
  4. Stirrd Up
  5. They pretty much tell you to submit your own links.

  6. MarkTD
Their trackback to you always shows up right away.

Honorable mention: Blogg Buzz. Still in Alpha, and you have to look on the upcoming tab for recent stories. They don’t send much traffic, but when they open up their platform to auto-entries, they could very well be the most Blog friendly social news site around.

Want more social media resources? How about this –> Influential Marketing Blog: 6 Useful Social Media Tools and Sites For Women “Based on some planning efforts for a number of campaigns we have recently been putting together for clients targeting women, here’s my starter list of 5 great social media tools for women.”

I love to link to starter lists much better than list of hundreds of things. A list of more than 25 items isn’t linkbait to me, it’s more damn work, LOL… Give me the best of breed list any day.

  • These are awesome tips for getting backlinks, bookmarked so that I can read it when I'm more awake =P
  • Our site (Loconut) is happy for people to submit their own links (if you're from WA)
  • Hello "Tech Thoughts",

Got a name? It's easier to bond with humans. :) There are actually more sites than these that are comfortable with us submitting our own links - these are just the top five. For example, there's Search Mob, and ISEDB for the search industry.

Thanks for commenting - please check out our DoFollow policy so we can follow your link in the near future.
  • Never knew that there are so many sites which allows self promotion...
  • Well, I wouldn't tell my friend "please vote on this story" - I'd ask them if they'd please vote if they LIKE a story I showed them, but that's as far as I'd go. The difference is integrity - letting people know about your story is just good marketing. Asking people to vote whether or not they like the story is going around the purpose of the social networking sites, and if you think about it, defeats your purpose too.

Why would you want more attention for what others are not agreeing is your best work? Traffic doesn't matter if it's junk. It can only make you money if it's good, targeted traffic.

I think it's a better idea to create community around your content, and in the communities where you hope to get more votes. But even a blog post doesn't have enough room to really explain this concept and how to go about it in a fair way.
  • This reminds me of how I managed to get banned by Netscape after two months of blogging: not only that I submitted everything I wrote, but I made 5-6 more accounts and I voted for my stories. Two of them got on the front page, and before I realized what is happening, I got banned forever. I'm still laughing when I remember how naive I was. However, I proved one thing: once the tipping point hit, the traffic grows exponential. When people see 5-6 votes on a story, they would be more likely to vote for it, regardless how stupid it is (and my posts were quite stupid). Had it been OK if I asked 5 friends to vote my stories? Which is the difference?
  • Hey "Palm coast",

You're welcome. What's your real name?

    Shams,

You're welcome. With social sites, the best way to sort through the new social sites is to think about which ones cater to your particular social group. Some bookmarking sites are really for blog readers, and that's fine. If you are more of a reader than a writer, even if you have your own blog, those will probably be better for you. And better for the community, because all the links you post won't be your own.
  • Thanks for all these tips - all are unknown to me. I use squidoo, digg, delicious, myspace, hi5..........I wonder about these crazy social sites. Every few days there is a new one ......
  • I use BUMPzee all the time, plugIM is pretty decent too. I haven't heard of the others, might try them out. Thanks for the list.
