A secret to popularity:
Don’t just spot trends. Start them.
If the trend is already started? Organize people around it.
Think about all the authors, actors, artists, or musicians you love. Are they simply leading trends that have already begun, or are they also starting new ones? Do they simply participate in popular culture, or define it?
It doesn’t matter how serious your business model is, either, or how much your industry supposedly colors between the lines. You can increase the reach of your message by either starting a new trend, or studying different trends than other people who write on the same topic.
Anyone can report on what Google is doing or just did. Can you detail how it will affect your readers or why they should care? If so, will it sound any different from what anyone else does?
The blogosphere is packed to bursting with posts on social media - what can you say that is a different take on the social media trend?
If you want to stand out, you can’t be a me-too.

This is a good observation. Why then, there are so many trendspotters? Maybe because if you want to be a me-too, you can’t stand out. And I suppose the entry threshold for a trendspotter is much lower than the one for a trendsetter.
