Since that very moment I know - facebook has limit too. great surprise for me. I do not use it for business - just for friends. So, 200-300 was ok for me, but what if I start to very facebook profile... hm, I'll continue reading your post

Thanks for sharing this info.

@ Tinu That's good advice there. Good content does bring fans of its own.

@ Tinu: probably many people who want to get 5000 friends, some of them want it just because it looks so much slang.

I can't imagine having 5,000 friends on my list but hey I'll get there if I get there.. LOL :)

5,000 friend limit removal of facebook would be great for the few people who has reach this limit.

Whether you get to 5000 friends, or even want to, depends on the way you use Facebook. I picked my first 300 friends very carefully, then let friends 300 - 100 be a little less scrutinized. Everyone after that came to me, because they liked my content or wanted to be connected to me for whatever reasons. I don't pitch people and if someone wants my help they have to come and ask me.

You can get there, too, IF you want to use Facebook for that, or if it happens to you that way as it did to me.

BTW, it's way, way impressive that you have 4,400 subscribers through Google Connect. That's an incredible vote of confidence in your as an author and leader.

Thank you for the mention in your article. I share your wonder about that hard 5,000 limit. Several times I'm been over the limit by as much as 8.

Though I've been at the limit for a long time, I have mixed feelings about raising the limit. The 5,000 limit is a roadblock for direct marketing companies and others who are merely looking for cheap ways to "get their message out."

On the other hand, as social media matures, many more people will bump up against the limit and will want more. The Fan Page is not the solution. Some other platform might just leapfrog Facebook when the masses get frustrated with the limit.

For now, I'm okay with the limit. Facebook is fun, but my "social networking" online is now done primarily through Twitter.

Have fun.

Hi Trey!

It's an honor to have you stop by. I have mixed feelings too, for the same reasons. I'd rather see the fans identity more closely integrated into the FB experience instead, something controlled on the user side. For example, maybe I want to see every single post to Search Engine Land's FB page postings in my News Feed and get their updates in my Inbox, But maybe there are some "friends" as well as some pages I'm a "fan" of, whose news I could do without, at least less often than they are inclined to send it.

The Fan Page really isn't the solution, not the way it is now. I agree there, too,

PS- I think the Google Connect number you're looking at is for all of Disqus, not me. :)

Hi Andy

Like I said it keeps appearing and disappearing. :) That's why I took 2 videos of it. Ever since I hit the limit, as I take inactive people off to make room for more active "friends" the number fluctuates. Logging in just now the number is 4996.

But as little as an hour ago, as you can see in the video, it was up to 5281. Regardless of whether my profile has ghosts (or more likely the people I remove are updating the number like it usually does), every now and again today, the number shoots up. Could be nothing, could be testing, could be a preface to something big.

I am currently seeing 4994 on your profile, so you might have some ghosts in your closet
