Your eyes do not decieve you. The old version of the blog is temporarily up. Let me tell you why really quickly....

About two weeks ago, Free Traffic Tips, the flagship of my traffic-related sites, was hacked. Again. I take every precaution that I can, but sometimes, popularity has its price. I wasn't really sure when to ask for it to be restored to, because I've been in and out all summer for various reasons, and wasn't quite sure what the last comment on the site was.

The week before last I asked some of you for help deciding where to set the marker, and I appreciate all your replies. Seems that particular backup was unavailable, so I'm pretty much stuck with the June 22 backup I made on my own, losing most of July. Luckily I didn't do that many posts in July so I'm too bummed about it.

Since I don't blog as much as I used to, I seriously considered shutting down my blog and putting the site back in the article format it was in before. I got some emails, blog comments and phone calls as a result. So with the fall season coming up, I'm coming back to blogging in the next few weeks, probably startng tonight once I restore the latest version of Wordpress.

Just wanted you to know that you hadn't stepped into the twilight zone, I guess... and thank you for staying subscribed to the feeds, etc, in the mean time. It's really touching that you like my content so much that you'd be This patient.

Ah, the viral blog. She is like a melody you can't quite remember. You wouldn't be able to hum it but you certainly know the song when you hear it. She's a light breeze on a hot Vegas day. She brings you a smile like the one when you make what is normally a week's profit in a day.

How do you know if your blog is, how do you say... virulent?

(I've got a whole french accent as I write this in my head. Scary.)

You know your blog is virulent when:

Whatever marketing you do for it has an exponetial effect
A growing percentage of your audience bookmarks your site
Your first-time visitor traffic is sticking, and you get more and more new visitors each month
If you try to leave your blog for a while, you start getting angry emails
Your site is linked from hundreds of places that have little to do with your topic matter, and several that are directly related to you
Your blog posts are commented and linked at other sites

A virus is something you get, but can't help but share. This about that while I cook up the next portion.

So. What is a Viral Blog? Why should you give a rat's backside?

Why are we talking about rats? Ew.

You've heard of viral marketing. That's when you create a strain of marketing that perpetuates itself. You don't need to grow it. You start the marketing, it builds its own momentum and keeps on going forever. You don't have to constantly jump-start it. In fact, you may not be able to stop it if you try.

So what is a viral blog?

A viral blog is one that people link to and pass on because they just can't help it. If they forget to tell someone about it, they might forget to use it themselves. Folks bookmark it, they tell other people about it, they email themselves so they won't forget. They join your subscription via email so they won't forget. They put your RSS feeds in their own special folders so they won't forget.

Viral blogs go beyond what is a pleasure to read and cross over into what is an absolute Must to read. Every time I hear someone say "I just can't live without your blog", I go back and inspect what I did that day. Any time someone says "Your blog is my home page." I say "Why?" and start taking notes.

A viral blog is one that promotes itself - not just in the search engines, or through your personal tagging, or from others linking to you. It promotes itself in every post without turning into a sales pitch. It brings your reader closer to you and enriches their lives in some way.

If your blog is a viral marketing machine, it builds you a fan base that collects your work, instead of clients who buy your products.

Fans have died for their hobbies and passions.

The viral blog has style, penache, that special I-don't-know-what. When you're going to a blogger's site constantly and you're thinking "I wonder what that nut has to say today", you're reading a viral blog.

Infectious blogs aren't just about traffic, or getting more sales, though that is totally fantastic. The Blog Virus is about spreading your brand deep into your reader's mnd and becoming a household word, even if it's just in the homes of people who buy your brand of toothpaste.

The virulent strain of blog marketing known hereafter as The Blog Virus brings you something you can't get from a static website. If you want to make a living, start a blog. If you want to make a fortune, start a blog virus.

Update to the Blog Traffic Package Tonight

I just did it last week to secure an additional top high traffic ranking for this site, without losing the old one.

What's the best non-free blog platform? It's not the one you think. It's an incredible system for blogging, and it completely frees you from worrying about SEO. Most medium to large corporations haven't heard of it, but if they did, they'd start blogging immediately. I'll tell you where to get it, and how to get me to train you on it personally. (One of those things that's useless in the wrong hands).

But this is totally delicious. If you're not a huge Matt Cutts fan and you love Google, you need to rip 2004 and 2005 off the calander and join the rest of the Googlaholics.

I particularly enjoyed this delectable post where he took time out of his Google Engineer schedule and posted answers to a bunch of Google questions.

I used to read him from time to time but now I'm becoming a die-hard fan. He started giving SEO Advice.

Getting Me to Talk About You!

Haaa... that's a joke. Well, kinda.

The first couple of times someone contacted me to ask me to write about them, I about laughed my lil behind off. Me? Write about you? Who am I?

They told me that a friend told them how much traffic they got the day I wrote about them or added them to my blog roll. Not what I would call a lot of traffic. But getting a hundred to a thousand new visitors to your site in a day/week can help kickstart some thangs.

That begs the question, how do you get me (or a real high-profile blogger like Steve Rubel) to blog about you?

Some people like email. I get too much mail, from too many accounts for too many sites, all forwarded to my Gmail. I have a million labels and a thousand filters. I still miss things. Willie Crawford is right, I need to open my ticketing system on this site, just so I can be able to track things.

Yet, for the moment, since there's no other way to contact me besides commenting on the blog, folks do that - they email me because there's no other way to reach me.

That is not now, nor ever will be, the way to get me to comment on your site in my blog.

So how do you get me to write about you?

Leave a comment and participate in the site for a while. Let me know that you listen. No need for any butt kissing. Just become someone I know - and hopefully like.
Send me a trackback. I like these almost more than comments because it makes me leave my site. I'm a vain creature and I'll have to see what you wrote about what I wrote about. Please, no love songs or offers to serenade me unless you're wealthy (not rich, rich I can do on my own.) and over the age of 28.
Leave me a comment asking me if we can instant message or if you can call me. My phone schedule is tight but I make a point of only booking one week into the future on Thursdays and Fridays.

People Keep Asking me "What is Search Engine Simplicity"?

So people keep asking me why I didn't have a list of basic services and costs on this site. The answer is because that encourages people to hire me.

No. Seriously. I haven't had enough time to take on more clients lately, and I belive in slow growth and quality work.

But as I said before, it will be up soon. I'll probably talk about that tomorrow sometime during search day.

But for now...

People keep asking me what search engine simplicity is, since I started mentioning it on various sites about a month ago. (I don't call it that anymore, at least not in public anyway, but that captures the idea best for now.) Well, I got tired of algorithm chasing about a month into my SEO career and said "Screw this. There's a better way." So I thought of a better way to get better, consistent search results in search engines from a really simple formula. I've been writing about it for my Traffic Reality folks for a few months now. In fact I plan on giving them an update on it this evening.

I may make it into a full product, or I may keep it only for Traffic Reality members. I haven't decided yet. I'm Totally Shameless... and I Made a Decision

Yes, I'm going to start another blog. All Increase Web Site Traffic Tutorials, on this here site. That's My Decision. I know it means starting a blog from scratch and promoting another feed but I'm gonna stop being a crybaby and SLOWLY do it. And I'll keep free traffic tips as it has been.

So what am I shameless about?

Since I'm making changes, I've decided to put up (finally) my testimonials page. All of you who have ever said anything nice about me and sent me a link will appear on that page. Then I could also show the way to building traffic to a new blog on the same domain, from scratch.

The Tools of the Day are from SEOBook. I don't know how I missed all these Free SEO Tools, long as I've been using that site. You've got your keyword research tools, your link analysis tools, your general tools, your research analysis tool, and the big 'un, the Google Toolbar button maker.
