I woke up about three hours before I could qualify as what any humanoid would call rested.
And I’m going right back to bed.
But first I wanted to tell you what I saw over at Facebook.
When I logged into my profile this morning, the page looked rather interesting. At the very top was a “can’t-miss” official notice.
It was Facebook’s notification that the public version of your profile was now searchable externally. I scratched my head thinking “What’s the big deal? My public page has been showing up in Google for weeks. ”
Then, realizing I just woke up, I read more carefully — this was now going to be searchable by non-members from the Welcome page.
That’s certainly a neat addition. If you are among the people who aren’t getting on Facebook because you think you don’t know anyone else who is on it, now you can check before you even sign up.
Of course, you’ll have to complete the sign-up process to communicate with them. However, this will make signing up to Facebook more appealing for some people. I didn’t see the point of being on Twitter until I saw who was on it already.
But what if you’re already on Facebook, and you don’t necessarily want to be found? Maybe you only want people you know to be able to send you a message?
Or maybe you’re a new Facebook user who doesn’t know how to make your public page more accessible?
It’s easy.
You can modify your privacy settings for your profile by clicking on Privacy in the upper right hand corner, which will take you to a page called Privacy Overview. Click on Search, which will take you to “Privacy Settings for Search“.
You’ll see your options for changing your settings, as demonstrated in the screenshot below.
Hope that helps- but if you need more help, come visit me in the Open for Web Business group on Facebook, or if you have my PDF guide on Facebook for Business, turn to page 43, where you’ll get a much more detailed explanation.
Or you can ask me stuff in the comments of course. But if you want an answer back, it’ll have to be in the afternoon. I’m going back to sleep.
