And you're right, sometimes free is worth the effort, and sometimes you just have to be able to say, my time is too precious for that, I'll hire someone/buy software/find someone to teach me the best way.

An interesting concept! I think your right working on your site takes time this is money you could earn some where else. But sometimes your time is not worth as much as you might have to pay out. So I think the thing is to weigh the cons and pros. then decide what is the best thing you could do for your business.
