Free Traffic Tips: Status (a big one)

If you’ve had problems accessing the site, you’re not the only one. :) Here’s the story.

Last week, I found out the owner of the wonderful folks who host most of my websites at AlphaTechOne was sick. Some of you know Wolf from back in the forum days. Ever since I moved the blog over from Free Traffic Directory and closed that site two years ago, I have never been happier with a web host, ever.

So when I got an alert saying that my traffic had tripled in the past few days I thought, the best get-better gift I ever got was knowing that I’d keep getting new business while I was sick. So I upgraded to semi-dedicated account.

But, busy bee that I am, I didn’t read the email that told me that I needed to set up new nameservers. Duh! So That made me think that there would only be momentary blink-out of the sites, as they were being moved, when actually, since they zipped up the site and moved it for me on the server, there shouldn’t have been any down time at all.

Think I caught a clue? Nope, too busy. Therefore, anyone whose ISP doesn’t cache sites immediately couldn’t see those two sites, and over time, no one could get to them, even me.

The problem is fixed as of 15 minutes ago. Sorry if it caused you a problem.

The thing that made me too busy to notice is an influx in new business in other parts of my other two companies. It looks like I am going to have my hands full for the rest of the summer. So in the meantime, now that I’ve got all that happening, I started thinking, what happens with Free Traffic Tips?

I have decided that I’m gong to lock up the archives and in a week or so, cut off the search function and block them from being spidered. You’ll still be able to access new posts freely, and individual posts will still be available in the search engines. But I’ve got to slow some of my growth and that means that apart from small projects, I’m not taking on any new business until I decide what direction I’m moving in.

Does that mean the end of Free Traffic Tips? Maybe. I haven’t gotten that far. Maybe I’ll sell it. Maybe I’ll just make it part of Traffic Reality. Just don’t know yet. I was thinking about adding a section with articles back into the front of the site so folks could submit articles. But it’s to the point that I’m too busy to do the weekly Zero Cost Traffic Ezine, and blog at Free Traffic Tips on any regular basis, and Traffic Reality, and maintain my AdSense sites, and have my entrepreneur clients and my corporate clients, and serve everyone to the best of my ability.

When you are so happily busy that you don’t notice your flagship site is down for a whole day – yeah. Time to re-evaluate.

So that’s what’s up. I know that was mostly a big “I don’t know what’s next” kind of thing, but better you guys are prepared for my possible departure, rapid expansion of my team, or whatever may come. This time next week, I might find an apprentice and say “never mind”. Or I’ll hire another assistant.

If I should decide to sell or fully archive Free Traffic Tips or make some other big change, there will be at least one more newsletter before I do. And I’ll continue to do a newsletter at Zero Cost Traffic but it will be way different after this next issue if I decide on going down another stream. And I’ll still be around. I’ll just be doing something else.

I’m going to be out until Tuesday. Any posts between now and then won’t be live. If you need to talk to me before then, you can leave me a message here or if it’s a question related to a product you have, remember to use the priority support email so me or my team can answer you quickly. Danka!

I can't argue with your experience, I can only go by what I have esperienced these past three years.

I've never had a problem with Toby or any of their staff's skillset, and I am a techie myself, so I know when someone is telling me they can do something that they don't do, even when I don't know enough to do it myself.

Again, I'm not at all trying to invalidate your experience, I can only think from my perspective, which is that what you went through was the exception and not the rule.

No one I've ever referred to them has had a problem with them, as far as I've polled them, and asked them individually, but in any business, you're going to have times when the match isn't right.

Hope you have better luck in the future.

I personally LOVE Alpha One Tech and I'm a very high maintenance client who is high profile and has hundreds of sites. I have two semi-dedicated server accounts, a reseller account, then a bunch of little accounts for the stuff I can't be bothered to maintain.

I'm a pain in their behind, and quite a drama queen, and they take me in stride. So for the average client who just wants to put up some sites and have Fantastico, they're probably a God Send.

I've been through some horror stories with hosts that auto-double charge, turn off PHP on your site without telling you, skip town and lave you hanging, or lock you into contracts you can't terminate unless you give up your site.

I won't even get into the customer service nightmare I'm having with Host Gator - I can't even get anyone to listen to my problems unless I let my accounts laspe into suspendeed status, and even then, they remain unresolved. With Alpha One, I enter a ticket, or send an email. I've even had them call me personally and spoken to Toby directly for troubleshooting. They've even blocked spam and DNS attacks against my site when I was snug in my bed asleep, unaware of the problems.

As a result of years of nightmares, I only trust two hosting companies implicitly. Host4Profit and AlphaOneTech. There are other ones out ther I consider good, but they are Great. I'm a very particular person, and thought it would increase my income greatly, I don't reccommend services I haven't used myself or don't have first hand knowledge of...

You actually like AlphaOne-Tech? What they did to our organization is is (figuratively) criminal. Your pal Toby isn't quite the Linux guru he thinks he is. He struggled for weeks to find a problem on a shared server they hosted for us and never did get a result. His response was to blame us. Funny thing though, his slpooiness didn't turn off the monitoring system and I continued to get Emails from it indicating that the server was still critical for DAYS after he shut our account off. Imagine having to move nearly 1000 customers off a server in less than 24 hours because your tech support can't find the problem. Not very fun and not something this organization or the team of people that were trying to bail his behind out of a jam will soon forget.

Hi Lokimona,

Saying that is like calling the doctor and saying "I'm sick, help me." Wouldn't you tell the doctor where it hurts, how long it's been going on, how you've tried to treat it yourself?

First thing I can tell you is to go to this page:
http://www.freetraffictip.com/the-free-traffic-met...

Read those tips and use them.

Second thing - you won't get far with a site hosted by someone else. Too much of a free host is beyond your control.

Third - When you've completed the steps, be really specific about what you need help with. The information here is free. Try that information first, or if you can't be troubled to do it, hire someone to take care of it for you. If you can't afford someone like me, buy a do-it-yourself guide, take the steps you learn, break them down into mini-projects, and hire college kids or someone off elance to execute the steps for you.

That's pretty much the best I can do for a really general question like that.

Hi ivantk,

Thanks for coming by. If you can't access your pages, and your host can't help you, move them again. This time go with one you're referred to by a friend. One of my sites is hosted by a really good site for $25, because that one site needs one feature few other hosts have. But I also have two reseller accounts on different servers to host all my smaller sites, one of which is on AlphaOneTech, and all my big sites are on AlphaOneTech as well. They've got plans that are as cheap as 6 bucks a month and they used to work with Dell computers. Quality and cheap. Find a new host and switch!]

Hey Tim,

I still don't know yet. I'm not going anywhere before the end of June if that makes you feel better. And even if I close this site, I'm not leaving the Net entirely, nor will I totally discountinue writing about traffic. We'll see I guess. It really touches me that you care. Sometimes it feels like I'm talking to myself, you know? :)

I was wondering where you were. I hate it when my server goes down without my knowledge.

But, like you it's nice to know that the other websites can still pull in the income.

However, I don't like the idea of not being able to get my free traffic fill. Can I persuade you otherwise?

Tim

I had problems with bad hosting companies too. The number one hosting provider (they claimed that) in Bulgaria just make my life so difficult ...

I've moved of course and some months later I've put one of my new sites on their hosting. And the result: Iu00e2u0080u0099ve tried to load the page but 404 :)
