Why
does Google seem to favor blogs in its listings? Does it have
anything to do with the fact that they own Blogger.com? How
did I know the answer to these questions, and what was all this
about being able to confirm my claims?
The
Google - Blog Connection
At
the time that I authored Marketing Success with RSS in July
2004, I had only theories. There wasn't any hard data I could
rely on. And I felt it would be completely irresponsible to
offer access to information this critical without being able
to confirm it.
And
now, finally, after months of compiling research and
testing my theory out on other sites, this fall, Google made
one small change that enabled me to prove my findings beyond
a shadow of a doubt. I'll even tell you some of my findings
for free, right now.
Why
does Google favor blogs?
They
contain timely, fresh and relevant information on a narrow topic,
and therefore they are best able to fill certain deficits
in the listings that the search engine compiles.
Does
it have anything to do with the fact that they own Blogger.com?
It's
more like this may be one of the reasons they bought Blogger.
More to the point,
the way Blogger sites are set up, sites that contain blogs often
take prime advantage of a few things Blogger is set up to do.
But,
any legitimate blog can use this information
to their advantage.
So what
is this secret? I will be happy to let you access it instantly in
just a few minutes.
To
avoid any confusion, let me first tell you what it's not.
What
This Ebook Is NOT About
This
is not a way to cheat your way into the search engines.
It just makes ethical use of information the search engines
want you to have, so much that they often display it on
their sites - in particular, Google.
This is
not a book about theory. It's based on cold hard facts
and can be confirmed by data you can look up right on Google's site.
This
will not show you how to get spidered today only to get dumped
tomorrow. Every day that
you follow these instructions, you will get spidered.
This will also show you the smart way to get listed for keywords
that will lead visitors who are more likely to buy to your site.
It
will be up to you to convert them -
but I'll tell you how to make that a likely event as well.
If
you have a blog-
or can get one -
and you can remember to fill out a form with a few lines on
it several times a week, you can get listed in Google within
23 hours and 53
minutes of reading this page (Counting the time you're
spending on this page now- I'm that confident).
It's that simple.
Some Background
: How This Works
Every site
on the Internet uses one method to get into a search engine's free
listings. Their site is discovered by or submitted to the web robots
(also called 'spiders' because they 'crawl' the 'World Wide Web').
This process is called 'spidering'.
Even
when you submit your site to a search engine to be listed
for free, what your site is waiting in line for, is to be
spidered.
Most
internet marketers and search engine optimization students worth
their salt know that you shouldn't ever, ever submit
your site's home page to Yahoo, MSN and Google.
Not
only will it take months for the spiders to even get
to your site in line, this method of being included in a search
engine doesn't carry any weight.
You
can get into a search engine much faster by getting linked
from a site that either has the same theme as yours, or that
will let you control the exact anchor text (the words that will
be hyper-linked to your site's address).
For
example, if I want to be ranked on the first page
for "Google
Blog connection",
then I'll want as many pages on the Net as possible to carry
a link to me like the one above,
linked to this page (see
Google).
If I couldn't get that to happen, then I'd want to be linked, in any fashion, from sites with similar themes.
This
is much easier said than done.
One
thing you can do is trade links, but you eventually find that
reciprocal links are not weighted the same as a link
to you in one direction.
Then
there's the fact that sites ranking highly for keywords you
want won't always want to trade links with you, or in
the fashion that you desire.
You
can buy some links, but this method is limited by the amount
of money you have to spend. Furthermore, any discovery that
the link is not a natural link to you makes it worth less to
you in your quest for higher page rank or keyword listings.
In
fact, most methods of getting linked are limited by the
amount of time you have to spend pursuing them, and the amount
of money you have to let someone else pursue the task, or purchase
them outright.
So
how do you get sites to link to you without linking back?
Enter
... The Blog Advantage
If
you're a blogger, or can become one, you have a unique
opportunity.
There
are sites out there that are frequently crawled by Googlebot
(Google's web robot) and other search engine spiders that want
your blog link, and can help you get into Google.
I'm
not talking about blog search engines and directories. These
can give you a boost, but they must be combined with
other, more frequently updated lists to get spidered within
the next 23 hours and 50
minutes.
I'm
talking about getting your blog on ping notification sites.
But,
contrary to popular belief, the "blog and ping" method
will not get you permanent rankings in search engines
anymore. Besides, who has time to blog an update, and ping every
15 minutes?
(And
if you're blogging and pinging without updating, you can get
your site blocked. Stop now if you're doing this
- even if, by sheer luck, you haven't been blocked, you will
be soon if you continue.)
But
you can use these ping notification sites in a special way that
involves only five minutes a day, for a week or so, if your
site is set up correctly.
The
first day you do this, you can get in Google within 24 hours.
If you follow my instructions to the letter, you can get Google
to keep coming back, repeatedly, even after you stop using this
method - and the rest of your site too, not just your blog.
However,
if your blog isn't set up to take maximum advantage of this
(and about 75% of blog are not) then you'll need to make a few
subtle changes to your blog and your site in order to do so.
Finally,
even though by their very nature, blogs are set up to help you
get better listings, if your basic blog data for your site is
not populated correctly, all your efforts will be for naught.
