Google Tuesdays : Google News and Press Releases

Apparently the word is out – if you want people to pay attention to you, distribute a press release that mentions Google.

And yeah, from experience, I can tell you that talking about Google will get you exposure. Google Tuesdays is easily the busiest day at my site except for Sundays.

But is a Google mention – epseically a gratuitous one – the best course of action for every site?

I say no.

Especially since it’s not the Only course of action. Especially since old pages that are available in the Internet Archives , as well as current pages of your site, are admissible in court. So if you say something that’s not true, or tested, in the long run, you may be shooting yourself in the foot.

Sure, you can put together some tools that will help you release an optimized press release, and submit it for distribution free at PRWeb.com. Not only could your press release appear on hundreds of sites, through the combined power of traditional press, and PRWeb’s RSS Feeds, which are available for free display on any site, you could actually bring targeted visitors to your site.

Not a bad thing, not an expensive thing. Not at all. If it’s appropriate for your site, it’s worth the trouble.

But is it the only way to get Google-related exposure, or for that matter the best way?

Not for most sites.

A better way would be to get exposure that informs your target audience, establishes you as an expert in your field, and pulls targeted visitors through a system at your site that gives you the chance to contact them over and over again at their request. Then you have another course of action if they aren’t part of the typical 1.5% of visitors who will buy your products on impulse.

You can follow up with them.

So how do you do this? What is this mysterious system?

Well first, let me ask you this. If you set up a Yahoo News Alert, GoogleAlert.com, or Google.com News Alert, to email you every time Google is mentioned, is it more likely that you’re looking for a news item about Google, or a news item that just mentions Google to get your attention?

Of course, you are probably studying Google, Google stock, or some other Google-related item. So that item probably won’t interest you. You’ll probably click on it out of curiousity, if at all, then click away. Great for them if they’re just looking for additional page displays.

Not the best technique to sell their products or services.

Here’s another question for you – what’s better than getting exposure because you mentioned Google?

The answer: Getting in Google News and Yahoo News (and by extension, other news sites or publications) for something that has to do with your site, products or a topic your target audience is interested in. That’s the kind of Google exposure you want. Now instead of a bunch of one-click visitors, you have a set of interested potential buyers.
