I was reading a post from yesterday at Search Engine Roundtable entitled eBay Threatened by Google. Rusty has a link to an article at Yeald.com about this.
Here’s a quote from the article at Yeald:
So why have Whitman & Co. been so keen to censor Google ads? The real reason appears to be that Google matches ads with listings generated by relevant keywords. This makes it possible for searchers looking for a specific product to compare prices on eBay with prices elsewhere on the Web. It also significantly extends the reach and potential of merchants to sell their goods well beyond the relatively limited confines of the eBay marketplace.
It’s interesting to me that eBay, whcih originated as an innovative business model, would be so threatened by the power of Google to provide alternatives that instead of modifying their business model to keep up with the times, they’d instead demand that Google make changes.
Or proclaim that they’re the best at what they do and admit that their rates are higher on a “you get what you pay for” kind of slant. Sometimes a higher price actually brings you more business…
The opinon response to the article was also kind of intriguiding. And don’t forget to stop by the SE Roundatlbe post for a forum discussion link.
