More on the Autolink debate

From the Internet Standard:

Why Google isn’t what it used to be: The Industry Standard: Guest Blog: Matt McAlister:

“The AutoLink debate seems more like the catalyst for venting frustration in a perception shift than a real complaint about the technology. Google was once the enabler of open market conversations, a doorway to a future where innovators could circumvent the establishment on the way toward improving the world we live in. But there’s something about this new feature that changes all that. ”

It quotes some people who are disgruntled with the new feature, which is the side of the fence that I’m on… after a tongue-in-cheek remark about how some are also upset with Google over what it’s reported new goal is – to make money.

Shock! Really?

Hey, I’m as much of – maybe more than – a capitalist as the next person. And I have been a huge proponent of Google, one who could care less how much or how little money they make as long as they have a good product.

However, now they’re messing with one of OUR product – namely our sites, but putting things into our pages that we don’t want there. That’s what’s upsetting, not that they make money from it – what people do with your content after they get it to their computers is up to them. And there shouldn’t be any interruption in that process until it hits their desktop. I really feel that anyone who thinks differently is missing the whole point of the ruckus.
