“I went to my server logs which track all activity on my sites. As I expected, the majority of traffic coming to my web sites was from search engines, but to my surprise I did see some directory referrals as well. They were not in great numbers but all the same they were still there.
Therefore I would say directory inclusion, at least in the free directories, is important because they may send you some traffic. It may not be in great quantities but with the ever increasing competition on the web, I’ll take traffic from wherever I can get it. Besides if it is free, why not take a few moments to submit your site?”
Thoughts ==> In the words of the lovely impersonation of a fictional character by Ben Stiller at the end of Starksy and Hutch…. “Do it, do it.” A one-way link to your site from a place that gets spidered, sends traffic, and is a reputable source is a good thing. Should you go nuts and find 1000 of them and submit to them all? No. There’s probably a thousand web directories that are relevant to your site, but are all of them good ones? Do they get spidered? Does Google think they’re important?
Answer those questions for the few dozen that are. Particularly for a niche keyword, 20 or so additional contextual link backs can make a difference. There’s a reason I include appropriate directory links in my book about increasing your blog traffic.
