News as reported by Blackberry Blast:
“Business 2.0 magazine is speculating that Google is will offer free Wi-Fi service across the United States. In an article in Business 2.0 magazine, Om Malik says that Google is buying up unused fiber-optic cable all over the country. He also mentions that Google is currently offering free Wi-Fi in San Francisco which looks to Malik like a test project that could go nationwide.”
My Own Wild Theories and Speculation:
My initial thoughts when just scanning the headline ranged from “what is this BS?” to “free nationwide wi-fi? Not Bloody Likely.?
After reading the original article in Business 2.0, I slanted my thinking a little more towards the thought that it does indeed seem that Google may be up to something… but is it necessarily free nationwide wi-fi? It’s just not quacking enough for me to call it a duck yet.
(Even if supported by advertising, this ISP model has failed in the past… of course the overhead in this case might be low enough to cover the costs. Hm.)
