This post is part of our 68 Traffic Tips day. To find the complete list when we’re done, see the original post. Be sure to subscribe to get a weekly round-up of our daily traffic tips.
- Before you write your first blog post, make a list of topics that speak directly to what people in your industry are most asking about. If you don’t know, consult WordTracker Questions.
- Do keyword research on your topic to use as tags and as subjects to write about. Run them through an online thesaurus as well.
- Optimize your blog for search engines. Properly configured blogs can get a continuous flow of traffic from search engines that is easy to maintain.
- Already have a blog? Double your blog posting for a week. Look at your traffic stats – this can bring 25 – 200% more traffic.
- Comment on more blogs by people in compatible markets. If you’re an interior decorator, it’s all well and good to comment on other interior decorator’s blogs, but you have more of an exclusive market among, say, local realtor blogs
- Submit to as many blogs taking guest blog posts as you can.
- Get some guest blogging happening on your site – it’ll give you a break and help you form partnerships.
- Don’t discount blog carnivals, or think that they’re beneath you. They tend to drive a lot of targeted traffic that’s actively interested in the topic.

Evergreen Traffic” width=”300″ height=”352″ align=”center” />
I need your help in thanking someone. All it’s going to cost you is a link, and maybe an email. If you want, you can even make money from it.
You might have checked your email yesterday and seen a message from me about Evergreen Traffic, and read about my story. Some people I know had never heard about that part of my background, and if you’re one of those folks, it probably explains a lot. If for no other reason than to satisfy your curiousity about me, go by and skim the page on Marlon Sander’s site.
And yes, that’s what I want you to link to, talk about, etc, but let me tell you why first.
What I really want to talk about first is how this whole thing happened – how I ended up suddenly having one of the people I admired first and most online decide that I needed to revive my product line, and how he dragged me, kicking and screaming, into creating another product that explains the core of the traffic system I use on my own sites.

Some folks have realized that they don’t necessarily have to be bloggers to benefit from blog traffic, and have taken to commenting on blog posts to increase traffic and links.
It’s not the best method out there, but hey, whatever pays your rent.
Seriously though, if you’re incorporating blog commenting into your overall traffic plan (you do have an Overall Traffic Plan don’t you? Mon Dieu…) and you’re new to commenting, here’s …

The comment people make the most about me is that I write in a way that makes it seems like I’m only writing to you, just you, and no one else in the world. I am really flattered by this comment, and I think it’s because I pick, at random, some person that I know, a colleague, a client, a subscriber I’ve had contact with online or off, and write my posts to them.
Normally I won’t tell anyone this. I’ll just write directly to that person. If they’re a beginner, I will write the post that day to their level of web expertise. If they have a site about document translation, I’ll tailor what I was writing to what they do.
But though I’m quite proud of my ability to do this, that’s not the topic of today’s tip.

Why don’t I consider leaving comments a traffic method?
Because commenting isn’t meant to generate traffic, it’s more of a by-product.
And yes, there are some things we can use to generate traffic, even though that isn’t their purpose, but only when it’s ethical.
Leaving comments for traffic alone isn’t ethical.
You’re trying to take something from a community that worked hard to get it, instead of getting credit for sharing something with a community that you belong to, and reciprocating when it’s given to you – these are two different things.
I wish there was a plug-in that let me keep people from leaving links until after a certain number of comments, and to turn their links off if they stopped participating.
Andy told me on his ultimate dofollow list about Lucia’s plug-in, which paid commenting may force me to turn to this evening.

A New Blogging Tool
Found this article in BloggingPro -
“What is it? Habari is a new blog engine. The name comes from the Swahili word that means ‘what’s the news?’ Unlike other blog software currently on the market, Harbari will be using more current technologies like object oriented programming techniques, thanks to PHP 5, and some slick interface interactions thanks of AJAX from the prototype library.
They are calling it the blogging system created by bloggers for bloggers, but honestly, you could say the same about other software that is on the market”.
Further on in the article – “You might recognize many of the names as people who have been heavly involved with WordPress for some time. It will be intersting to see how many more big names from WordPress jump on board the Habari project”.

Howdy.
We all want traffic. But, unfortunately sometimes we get a Pinto and other times we get zilch. What we really want is a big 18-wheeler with two tandems behind. Ahhhhh – just imagine how good that would feel. It kinda gives me the shivers!
Bumped into this article from “Barry Schwartz offers tips and tricks on driving traffic via social media.”
The article goes on to say – “Getting the right traffic to your blog or site is the key to your succes. Social media’s all the rage these days, and there are dozens of services out there. How can you use these services to help drive traffic?”
The piece is in interview format and they discuss Twitter, Digg, Del.ici.ous, Reddit and so on.
