This tool crawls your site more like a person could who was browsing your site. It’s a great tool if you
- Have pages that are generated on the server side, but only show up on the client side, such as PHP-Nuke and other content management systems
- Are using a variation of mod_rewrite to get your pages to show up as .html or .php extensions
- Have no idea what any of what I just said means but still want to use Google Sitemaps.
- Have password-protected files that would get included
If you can cut and paste a link to your site, you can use this tool.
It’s downloadable and you can run it in Windows, and for some reason? Is free. There’s a donate button on his site – I donated and if you’re using it for commerical purposes, you should too. I don’t know him or anything, I just think it’s a great tool that deserves at least a $20 tip.
What makes it the best? It’s simple. It’s fast. You don’t need to learn anything new to use it. It crawls your site from the public side, so only links you would want for public viewing will show up. It has no limit for number of links crawled — I have a resource site that is about 20,000 pages and it’s still crawling.
Wish list? I wish it ran faster. I have to leave it up for more than a couple hours on any site I own that is more than 2000 pages. I wish the “crawl all links” feature automatically skip links that lead off the site. I sometimes have trouble with the compressed version of the map that is automatically created.
But man. What do you want for a free tool?
