Note: I’m actually posting this on Monday night, I’m just posting as a Sunday post to keep you from getting lost as I step my posting back up this week.
I was watching my absolute favorite TV program, Extreme Home Makeovers, and I saw this commercial for one.org. Before I go any further, let me just say – if you have trouble believing that there are good people in the world anymore, turn on ABC at 8 PM your local time and watch this show.
It doesn’t matter if you’re not into home improvement, or decorating – what you’ll find is great people doing great things for other great people. I’ll just warn you – it’s also made me a lifetime convert to buying only Kenmore appliances and I decided this past week that the only home I will ever own has to be built by KB home. I don’t care how long I have to wait.
But from the CEOs who donate their time and resources, to the neighbors who put up with the noise, to the people who get new homes, to the people who build them. It’s an inspiring show.
I know. Tangent, big time. But the show made me feel physically better – things like that really help me get well quicker and remember why I’m so dedicated to my mission in making these posts and doing my best to help you.
But back to the point. This is a Non-profit mission anyone can participate in, that won’t require you to donate anything. All I’ll ask is that you visit their site, sign their petition if it’s your thing, and tell just one person about it. It’s all over MTV and ABC right now.
And it just feels so right. Read this quote from their website about their mission.
WE BELIEVE that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty.
WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs – education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans – would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget.
WE COMMIT ourselves – one person, one voice, one vote at a time – to make a better, safer world for all.
Sometimes you read things like this and you wonder if it’s possible. But once you realize how many good people are in the world who can join together and do just One Thing, make One Powerful Statement, and leverage millions of people taking one small action simultaenously – man, we really do have the power to save our worlds if we’d just get our heads together.
So visit them at www.one.org and see for yourself. If you run into Bono, tell him I think he’s the greatest. Keep your hands off Brad Pitt, unless of course you see Jamie Fox. Let him know I’ve decided to wear white to our wedding…
