It’s 2:49 a.m as I start posting this, and I feel like I’m the only person in the world. When I decided to work for myself again, I wasn’t thinking about the schedule.
Today we’re going to talk about Doorway Page Generators. I’m lazy so I’ll be saying DPG for short.
If you’re new to internet marketing, you might be tempted to shell out up to $200 on a product to make what used to be known to some of us old-timers as doorway pages.
If you’re not so new, you’ll remember them from days of yore, and wonder if changes to search engines are making them useful again.
Some experts will tell you they are all absolute crap, and some say they work, so what’s the harm? All I can tell you are my own experiences, from tests on my sites and others.
There’s a product on the market that was available at the height of the original doorway page craze and is still around, called Web Position Gold. It’s still around. This product has always worked for me, and I still use it from time to time, especially when I’m doing work for clients.
One of the things they say in their documentation is that if you think about it, every page of your site is a doorway to more information. And that’s the frame of mind I think you should have when you evaluate these produts.
Should you load up a DPG, make 2000 of the out-of-box pages and expect a stampede of traffic to your site?
No.
But you shouldn’t necessarily dismiss them either.
While it’s true that you can’t expect to create a bunch of nearly identical pages and expect them to rank well in the search engines, a DPG can be a useful tool if used correctly.
How?
Put real content on the pages, and only use them to target your minor keywords. By minor keywords, I mean relevant keywords that have little or no competition. Then make sure the rest of your pages have good, relevant content on them that is frequently updated.
I don’t know if I’m too tired to get to that part of the discussion today, but I’ll give you more details before Tuesday morning. In the meantime, don’t run off and purchase one – they’re not all built alike.
And there’s one on the market now that’s free.
