There’s a million and one tips out there on how to beat the search engines. And some of them work. But why would you want to do that when you can make the search engines work with you, or even for you?

It’s easier, it takes less time, and you can be rewarded with traffic for the quality of your content, if you do it correctly.

And here’s the center of this concept — the content you use does not necessarily have to be all your own.

I’ve talked before about turning your site into an industry leader. Doing this is simple, but it takes time, and the effort is worth it, and your only expense is time.

Think about what is needed for your chosen area of focus. If you’re stumped, start brainstorming with this question - what were you looking for in this area when you were brand new at it?

Some of this content doesn’t necessarily have to originate from your own brain power. Your visitors can write some of your content for you, in comments they have made, or in dialog they have with you.

There’s also free content available across the web that you can publish on your site or in your newsletter, so long as you leave the resource box intact.

Just remember, it’s not just the amount of content, it’s the quality- don’t feel like you need to take on the responsibility of becoming a generalized portal to the world of umbrellas - stick to your specialty area, and build a mini antique-umbrella city.

Some ideas…

Links to other sites in parallel markets
- in directory format, not a links list -,
articles written by you or someone else,
tips on using the products you sell,
a comparison shopping guide.
forums,
a blog,
a page of comments about your products or services,
archived copies of your newsletter,
current RSS feeds,
archives of old RSS feeds,
reviews of common resources and tools,
frequently updated feeds on a central news page from other sites that allow you to syndicate their content.

I’ll add more to the list as I think of things, but this is more to give you an idea. You don’t have to include all of these things. The idea is, give the search engines, as well as your visitors, what they want from you - good fresh content that they can’t possibly consume in one visit. Build it up to 25-50 pages to start with, then add a page a day to keep them coming back for more.

This way, instead of trying to “better” the search engines, or cheat yourself a ranking, you can approach them as partners in your search for free traffic. Everybody’s happy.

Be back with more in a few.
