Tool Time Friday | Let your freak flag fly!

Actually that’s a line out of Stephen Still’s song – Almost cut my hair.

For those of you who don’t know who Stephen Still is he was with the group – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (orginally just Crosby, Stills & Nash).

For those of you who don’t know who CSN&Y are – well, there’s just no hope.

FlagFox displays a country flag depicting the location of the current website’s server and provides quick access to detailed location and webserver information.

Flagfox is an extension for Mozilla Firefox that shows a flag icon indicating the current website’s server location. It uses relatively little resources, and works by accessing an IP address location database contained within the extension rather than relying on top-level-domain roots like “.com” or “.uk”. Clicking the icon loads Geotool, which provides a map of the location as well as more detailed information such as the ISP, city, and local time. The context menu also provides quick access to information about the country of origin, as well as the ability to lookup the domain’s registrant via Whois.

Uses of Flagfox range from simply educating users about the global nature of the Internet to:
* SEO and web development research
* Indicating the native languages and legal jurisdictions for webservers
* Warning when sites that are not in the country the say they are
* Quickly viewing/copying server IP addresses for diagnostic and other uses

Flagfox is fairly customizable, allowing users to choose between two icon sets with positioning options anywhere in the address or status bar. Advanced users may create their own custom lookup to perform specialized searches for the current server.

So, as I said, let your freak flag fly!

  • Hey, just wanted to ask if it's normal for flagfox to lag behind (i.e. not display instantaneously on page changes)
  • It is simply matchless phrase ;)
  • Hi was just going around the whole site you 've done some tight work
just wanted to say HI :)
    and I stumbled you
  • Still has a few bugs, i've been able to confuse it with a hawaiian server, it displays trinidad and tobago, but still nice and useful :)
  • Really great read - are you having fun with it? Keep up the good work and good luck with your site!
