This is about getting your Blogspot blog off Blogger onto your own server via FTP. This way, if you really love Blogger, but want more traffic opportunities and more control over your site, you can publish it to your own servers.
(We’ll do importing to WordPress another day.) This is actually a simple process, but there are a couple of places that may make it confusing even to people who are used to FTP. Video is approximately 9 minutes – Click on the first show in the channel, Blogging Video Tips #1.
(Some evenings, you can chat with me live if you’re around on this page. I’ll try and post a time…. but I’m probably going to just pop in when I’m feeling well.) Oh, and feel free to share the Channel with your friends. I’m also taking submissions….
6 Reasons Why You Want to Move Your Blogspot Blog to Your Own Server – Even if You Want to Keep Using Blogger
There are a lot of people who know how to do this, but still don’t want to – and I think it’s because they aren’t aware of how much more traffic they can get just by moving their site.
- Complete control over your content, with the same features. When Blogger’s down, your pages are still up, although you will not be able to post. You keep the functionality, yet achieve integration.
- More Traffic OpportunitiesYou’re missing out on being able to seamlessly use your blog to transfer traffic to other parts of your site when you’re on blogspot. Not to mention the ability to get better traffic for the blog itself.
- Better for Search Engine PositioningIf you aren’t building a long-term blog or one for business, you might not care about this. However, if you’re publishing on Blogger’s platform, you may not realize – or be able to see – the search engine advantages you may be losing.
- You seem more professional. When your blog is on your website, it infers that you’re more capable, and knowledgeable about technical matters, especially to people who’ve tried this, and due to the awkward set up, failed.
- There may be some terms and conditions that no longer apply to you when your pages are on your own server. Read the terms and conditions carefully for this.
- Far less chance of being accidentally deleted.I’ve known several people who were deleted by accident or through some kind of server hiccup. When the files are on your server (especially if you back up periodically), there’s much less chance that you’ll be wiped out, and if you are, you may be able to restore from your backup or your hosts.
Some cautions: If you aren’t using FeedBurner to redirect your traffic, you could lose some feed subscribers by moving. If this concerns you, you may want to stay on Blogspot. Also, if your site is ever down, then so is your blog. When I was using Blogger, I resolved this by re-publishing my blog to blogspot if we were down unexpectedly, and changing the settings back when it was all over.
Happy Blogging!
