Why should you care about Facebook as a business person? Because Facebook users have already done the job of sorting themselves out and congregating in a place where you can reach them in a predictable fashion.

Fish where the fish are if you want to be a successful fisherman. (Update: Fishing involves putting out bait and letting fish come to you, not running after fish in a boat with a bullhorn, shouting into the water. If you watch the video, you’ll see a bit of why marketing on Facebook really isn’t marketing at all.)

  • Well Faraz, thanks for commenting. And it's definitely like I said before, Facebook, like anything else, is a communications device. Some people use it for sending and receiving business information. If you don't want people to send you business information, don't add people who want to send you business information.

    It's really that simple.

I'm never going to tell someone, as I've said many times, "this is the right way, and the only right way." I'm just telling people how to get my results.

Also, I have never, not ever, simply "promoted some product" on Facebook. You won't find my sales pages there. You just won't, not on my profile. I set up my profile as the bait and the fish who want it Come To Me.

That's a very critical point. I don't market on Facebook in the traditional sense. I provide value, and if people want my services, they have to ask me.
  • I dont completely agree with you there.. facebook is a trust place.. people (including me) go there to check on friends and family and to just see how they are doing.. I do not want anyone in my friend list trying to promote some product..

  • Well that's easy. Look at the people who are using Facebook in your market. It costs nothing to get an account. You search for groups, add a few people, look up influencers in your market and your peers and see if they are on Facebook, and if so, are they importing notes, sharing links, or not participating. I've found that Facebook users are the most active folks who come to the blog, as well as among my clients and customers.

I'll make an audio or video about that.
  • That makes sense I guess. But it does depend on your market (or quality of fish).
If you fish in a pool full of carp you're never going to catch a marlin. Makes me wonder what the quality of facebook fish are like?
